Kondensator-mikrofoner skiljer sig drastiskt från dynamiska mikrofoner. De är betydligt känsligare i både ljudupptagning och ömtålighet. De har förmågan att ta upp allt ljud som sker i rummet. På grund av den känsligare ljudupptagningen så blir ljudet generellt mer detaljrikt. Kondensator-mikrofoner delas oftast upp i antingen stormembran eller småmembran.
Generellt så brukar småmembrans-mikrofoner vara väldigt bra på att ta upp transienter och höga frekvenser, de brukar även vara lite mer riktade än stormembrans-mikrofonerna. Dessa mikrofoner används flitigt som overhead till trummor och nära mickning av individuella cymbaler (Hi-hat, Ride t.ex), men kan lika gärna användas till akustisk gitarr och andra akustiska instrument.
