The Vic Firth SJD is Jack DeJohnette's signature stick – a stretched 5A that gives you a bit of extra reach without feeling heavy in the hand. It's built for jazz and fusion, with a medium taper that balances feel and control between the butt and the tip.
Feel and playability
The medium taper puts the balance point right between the butt end and the tip, giving you flex and fast response without the stick feeling front- or back-heavy. The slightly longer length is popular with drummers who want extra reach across cymbals and toms without changing their grip.
Tip and material
Made from hickory with a wood tip in a tear drop shape and medium surface area – a combination that produces a warm, rich sound with clear definition rather than a hard, bright attack. The surface has a painted finish.
