Vic Firth RUTE – The Original Rods

RUTE is Vic Firth's original rod design, built for all-around playing across rock, jazz and combo settings where you want to bring the volume down without losing character in the attack.

The model is built from 16 birch dowels (.125" / approx. 3.2 mm diameter), set into a solid birch handle with a comfortable, well-balanced grip (grip diameter approx. 19 mm / 0.75", total length approx. 420 mm / 16.5"). The solid handle sets RUTE apart from rods built with dowels running the full length, giving a slightly more stable, predictable feel in the hand.

What are rods?

Rods are several thin dowels bundled together into a single stick. There are many variations - different thickness, materials and dowel counts - all aimed at giving a drum or percussion instrument a distinct sound character. Compared to regular drumsticks, rods deliver lower volume but a completely different voice: a softer attack and an acoustic, almost percussive quality. They work equally well on a drum kit or on various percussion instruments whenever you need to keep the sound level down without switching to brushes. A few different rod variants belong in every drummer's stick bag, ready for whatever the gig calls for.

Vic Firth, founded by Everett "Vic" Firth in 1963, is one of the most established names in stick making, offering everything from hickory drumsticks to brushes, rods and mallets for most percussion instruments.
