Toontrack Area 33 – Origin SDX
Product Description
Five rare vintage kits for Superior Drummer 3, recorded by Fredrik Thordendal and Daniel Bergstrand at Thordendal's Studio 33 in Stockholm. Each kit represents a branch in the family tree of classic hard rock and heavy metal, from the late 1960s through the 1980s. The toms are recorded in two versions, open and dampened, and every drum and cymbal is captured both as a mono microphone and a stereo pair.
- Five unique drum kits, all rare vintage instruments
- Toms recorded in two configurations: open and dampened
- A total of 12 snare drums, 11 bass drums, 76 toms, three hi-hats and 24 cymbals
- Every drum and cymbal represented by both a mono microphone and a stereo pair
- 11 ambience microphone positions, seven of them in stereo
- More than 130 GB of sampled drums and cymbals
- Recorded and produced by Fredrik Thordendal and Daniel Bergstrand at Studio 33, Stockholm
- Sampled by drummer Leo Margarit, Pain of Salvation
Going back to the beginning
Area 33 SDX was one of the most comprehensive metal libraries ever recorded. This expansion goes further back in time, picking up before the first one ended. The team returned to Studio 33 and selected five kits that each mark a point in the evolution of heavy rock, from its formative years up to where Area 33 SDX takes over.
Open or dampened
Every kit has its toms recorded in two versions. The open version delivers roar and long tails. The dampened version delivers a tight, snappy sound. Together they cover the space in between, so the same kit works across very different productions without needing compensation in the mix.
The microphone setup
Beyond the classic close-miking, every position is doubled with additional microphones. This gives both a mono channel and a stereo pair for every drum and cymbal. On top of that come 11 ambience microphones, seven of them in stereo, capturing the character of the room at Studio 33.
