Tama Superstar Classic 7-Piece Shell Pack - Indigo Bintangor Burst
Product Description
The Superstar name has stood for considered design and clear projection for more than forty years. Superstar Classic carries that on with thinner all-maple shells, the Star-Mount system and the low-mass single lugs that point straight back to the Superstar of the seventies. This is a seven-piece shell pack including a snare drum, finished in Indigo Bintangor Burst. Stands, pedals and cymbals are not included.
Seven drums give a wide tonal range and plenty of room to build fills. At the same time this is a kit built to be affordable rather than exclusive, and that shows in details like hoops and heads rather than in the shells themselves.
Maple shells with Bintangor
Toms, floor toms and snare use a 5mm shell with four plies of maple and two outer plies of Bintangor. The bass drum is 7mm with six plies of maple and two outer plies of Bintangor. The thin shells vibrate easily and give an open, resonant voice with a clear fundamental. The Bintangor ply carries a fine-lined grain that almost looks drawn, and in the Indigo Burst treatment it takes on a depth that is unusual at this price.
Star-Mount and classic details
The Star-Mount system attaches to the lugs rather than straight into the shell, letting the shell resonate freely for longer sustain. The hoops are triple-flanged, which gives a more open and slightly warmer voice than die-cast hoops. The lugs are low-mass singles, both for the look and to keep mass off the shell. The badge is TAMA's classic T-shape.
Factory heads
The kit ships with Power Craft II heads. They are perfectly playable out of the box, and for many players they are enough in the rehearsal room. If the kit is going to be miked regularly, new heads are the cheapest single upgrade you can make.
Who it suits
A good choice if you want a large kit with genuine maple shells without moving into flagship territory. It works especially well as a step up from an entry-level kit, or as a second kit to leave in the rehearsal room. If you want die-cast hoops and specialised shells, there are more expensive lines in the range.
Our Tips
- Change the batter heads first if you want to lift the kit. The shells are better than the stock heads suggest.
- Seven drums is a lot to tune. Do the bass drum and snare first, then the toms in descending order, and you will hear where the kit sits.
- Triple-flanged hoops take more bending than die-cast ones. A hoop knocked out of true in transit can usually be eased back carefully.
