Tama Starphonic Spruce 14"x6" - Satin Natural Spruce with Inlay

Product Description

The Tama Starphonic Spruce PSP146E-SSC is a 14" x 6" snare drum with a spruce shell, finished in Satin Natural Spruce with inlay. Spruce is well known among guitar builders for its warm tone, and here it delivers a warm, full sound without losing clarity in the top register.

The tonal character can be compared to what aluminum is among metal snares, but drier and warmer. That makes this drum a favorite for drummers who love ghost strokes, and its wide sweet spot makes it especially useful in demanding acoustic settings. The drum delivers a fat, low tuning and can just as easily be tuned up for a dry, funky pop sound in higher registers.

Construction

The shell is built from 9 plies of maple laminate with an outer layer of Mappa Burl, 8 mm thick. The strainer is an MLS50A/MLS50B Linear-Drive with ratchet-type adjustment featuring tight increments, fitted on both sides for precise control. The hoops are Grooved Hoops, giving stable tuning and an open sound that enhances the shell's unique character across tuning ranges.

Lugs and heads

Freedom lug and Claw Hook are Tama's solution for quick and easy head changes, while also enhancing both the sound and the look of the vintage era. The snare wires are Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon, giving a warm and clear top register. The drum is fitted with EVANS heads: a B14G1 Coated batter head and an S14H30 Hazy snare-side head.
