This is the matching snare drum for the Starclassic Performer Blacked Out Black Edition, sold as a standalone model. Like the kit, it is matte black throughout, from the shell to the lugs and hoops. From the factory it carries an Evans Black Chrome batter head, which belongs to the look and shapes the sound.

The 14"x6.5" format is the classic all-round snare size: deep enough for weight and body, not so deep that sensitivity suffers. It is the size most players land on when they only keep one snare.

The Black Chrome head

Evans Black Chrome is a two-ply head that gives a shorter, tighter sound than a single-ply coated head. The attack is decisive, the overtones are held back and the drum rarely needs extra damping. It suits dense arrangements where the snare has to be heard without ringing over everything else.

Part of a set, fine on its own

The snare is built to match the kit, but it works just as well alongside a completely different set. A black snare with a short, gathered voice is rarely the wrong call, in the rehearsal room or in front of a microphone.

Who it suits

A good choice if you have, or are considering, the Blacked Out Black kit and want the same look all the way through. It also suits players who want a short tone and clear attack without reaching for damping. If you want an open, ringing snare voice with plenty of air, a thinner single-ply head is the better direction. The run is limited.

Our Tips

• The Black Chrome head is damped by design. Start without tape or gel, you usually will not need it.
• Tune the resonant head above the batter head to bring out the snare wire response on light strokes.
• Wipe the matte finish with a dry cloth. Gloss cleaners can leave an uneven sheen.
