The Blacked Out Black Edition is a limited run of the Starclassic Performer where every component is finished in matte black: shells, lugs, hoops and hardware. What sets it apart from other black kits is that the inside of each shell is painted deep black as well, with clear heads on the toms so that interior shows. The kit is a five-piece shell pack with two toms and two floor toms. Stands, cymbals and snare drum are not included.

Under the finish this is a Starclassic Performer, which means a maple and birch hybrid shell. The maple brings warmth and an even voice across the range; the birch adds attack and definition. It is a combination that handles both open, singing toms and a short, controlled groove.

The look is part of the build

The black-painted interior is more than cosmetic in practice, it is the first thing you see when you sit down behind the kit. Through the clear batter heads the toms take on a depth that is hard to put into words. The bass drum front head is a Fiberskyn-style black head that ties the whole thing together.

Star-Cast and die-cast hoops

The toms hang in the Star-Cast Mounting System, which attaches to the hoop rather than the shell. The shell is left free to resonate, which you hear as longer sustain and a more open voice. The die-cast hoops pull the other way and tighten things up: shorter tone, more stable tuning and better control of the overtones. Together they give a tom that sings and still sits still in the mix.

Factory heads

Toms and floor toms ship with Evans G2 Clear batter heads, a two-ply head that takes hard playing and holds back the highest overtones. It is a good starting point for rock and heavier material and rarely needs changing straight away.

Who it suits

A good choice if you want a kit that reads from the back of the room without becoming a gimmick, and that takes being hit hard night after night. It works especially well for players in rock, metal or pop. If you are after a traditional lacquered wood look, this is not the edition to look at. The run is limited.

Our Tips

• Matte surfaces show fingerprints. Wipe them down with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid gloss cleaners.
• The matching MBSS65MB snare drum in the same finish is sold separately if you want the full set in one look.
• Clear tom heads are part of the design. Switching to coated heads loses the effect of the black interior.
