The shell is built from 6 plies of walnut, 5 mm total, with a round, focused body that balances a brilliant snare response against the die-cast hoops' cohesive low end. The drum works well for close miking, but also has unusually good acoustic projection, so the sound stays deep even at higher tunings without losing snap.

Star Walnut shares hardware with Star Maple and Star Bubinga, but does not have the Sound Focus Ring or the inlay option, which is reflected in a lower price. The bearing edge, however, is the same STAR bearing edge fasning found on all Star models, making it just as easy to tune.
