Spartan is TAMA's answer to a problem most drummers recognise but rarely talk about: heavy stands that cost you energy to carry and fiddly adjustments that steal focus right before you play. The HS70S is the series' snare stand, and it is about more than weight reduction alone. The basket arms are hollow aluminium tubes that deliver remarkable lightness and still hold the snare steady under heavy playing. Anti-Walk Rubber Feet stop the stand from creeping, which is otherwise the usual weakness of a light stand.

The whole Spartan series is built from the ground up in aluminium, with the parts that take the wear, bolts and T-nut threads, made in zinc die-cast and steel. That is where light stands normally fail, and that is where TAMA has put the material.

Anti-Walk Rubber Feet

When the stand lifts slightly off the floor during playing, a section at the centre of the rubber foot stays in contact with the ground. It sounds like a detail, but it is the difference between a light stand that stays put and one that creeps away mid-song.

Basket and angle adjustment

The basket takes snare drums from 12" to 15" in diameter. A single T-nut adjusts one arm, and the other two fold inward for compact storage. The Quick-Set Tilter gives smooth, stepless angle adjustment, so there are no fixed positions to compromise with.

Who it suits

A good choice if you carry your own gear to gigs and want to cut weight without giving up stability. It works especially well for players who gig often or travel with their kit. If you need a stand for an extremely heavy studio snare, a heavier-gauge stand may be the safer call.

Our Tips

• Fold the two movable basket arms in for transport. The stand then takes noticeably less room in the bag.
• Do not tighten the basket harder than needed to hold the drum. An over-tightened basket can damp the shell.
• Wipe the rubber feet after playing on dusty floors. The contact surface is what does the work.
