This is a Limited Edition of TAMA's S.L.P. G-Maple, built on a thicker maple shell with a Mappa Burl outer ply. The added thickness gives a brighter tone with more volume and a sensitivity that answers the lightest touch. The Sound Lab Project line is where TAMA builds snares with a character of their own, and this one sits right at the front of that range.

A maple shell of this kind covers a wide range: the low end is there, but it is the midrange and the open, clear attack you notice first. The deeper format adds weight without making the drum sluggish.

Maple shell with Mappa Burl

The shell is twelve plies of maple with a single outer ply of Mappa Burl. That makes it noticeably thicker than a classic six-ply shell, and you can hear it: more volume, a brighter voice and a clearer statement as you push the dynamics. The outer ply is not only cosmetic, but it is the first thing you see. Twilight Mappa Burl is a transparent finish that lets the burl grain show, darkening towards the edges.

Die-cast hoops and tube lugs

The hoops are die-cast with ten holes, which tightens both the tuning and the tone. You get a shorter, more focused sound with better control over the overtones, and a drum that holds its tuning through a run of hard sets. The lugs are MTL60 tube lugs, leaving the shell free to resonate while contributing to the classic S.L.P. look.

Snare wires and heads

The snare wires are 20-strand Starclassic hi-carbon steel, giving a tight, articulate response that stays readable at low volume. From the factory the drum carries an Evans G1 Coated batter head with a thin snare-side head underneath, a balanced starting point that works as well in the rehearsal room as in the studio.

Our Tips

• Die-cast hoops give a shorter sound than triple-flanged ones. If you want more ring, try tuning the resonant head up a couple of steps before changing heads.
• Start with the batter head tuned medium-high. The thicker shell responds best when the head is not sitting too loose.
• To keep the finish looking new, wipe it down with a dry cloth after playing. Twilight Mappa Burl is a transparent lacquer where fingerprints show.
