Peter Erskine's new signature snare builds on the same shell concept as his 14"x4.5" Jazz model, in a compact 10" format. The hybrid spruce and maple shell delivers rich mids and articulate highs, and a Sound Focus Ring on the batter side only, an idea that came from Erskine himself, creates a crisp attack and a clearly defined, open tone.

The small diameter sharpens articulation without losing tonal depth. This is a drum for players who want to sit something alongside their main snare that cuts differently, or who want an effect snare that can actually be played musically.

Spruce and maple

The shell is 6mm with four plies of spruce and two inner plies of maple. Spruce is an unusual choice in drum building and brings lightness and an open, airy character. The maple inner plies add stability and an evener voice across the range.

A Sound Focus Ring on the batter side only

The ring sits on the batter side alone. That gives a crisper, more defined attack without choking the resonance from below. In practice the drum sounds tight from the top and still breathes, which is hard to achieve on a shell this small.

Star-Cast and placement

The Star-Cast Mounting System is included, leaving the shell free to resonate and letting you hang the drum off a tom or cymbal stand. The small size makes it easy to position anywhere in the setup, even when things are already tight.

Who it suits

A good choice if you play jazz, fusion or studio work and want an extra voice beside your main snare. It works especially well for players who already own a 14" and are looking for contrast. It is not intended as the only snare in a rock setup. Made in Japan.

Our Tips

• Tune it high. A 10" snare comes into its own with the head tight and the tone short and clear.
• Place it to the left of the hi-hat or between the toms, depending on how often you switch. The Star-Cast mount keeps the mounting flexible.
• Do not swap the snare wires without reason. The MS20SN10S set is sized for this shell.

Can it be used as the only snare?

It is intended as a complement. A 10" snare gives a different voice from a 14" and lacks the width and weight a main snare usually needs.
