Meinl Percussion African Talking Drum 7"x12"
Product Description
The Meinl African Talking Drum is a traditionally built talking drum with a carved mahogany shell and goat skin heads that provide a wide tonal range. By squeezing the ropes between your arm and the body of the drum, you can bend the pitch while playing, creating the instrument's signature "talking" sound. A mallet for playing the head is included.
Feel and Pitch Control
What makes a talking drum unique is the ability to actively change pitch while you play. Pressing the ropes between your armpit and the side of the drum tightens the heads and raises the pitch; releasing the pressure lowers it again. The flexibility of the goat skin gives a wide tonal range and allows for expressive, gliding pitch movements that define the instrument.
Construction
The shell is carved from mahogany, a stable and resonant wood. The heads are natural goat skin, chosen for its elasticity and responsiveness to pressure changes. Tension is held by 23 nylon ropes (3 mm) running between the two heads along the shell.
Who It's For
Suited for percussionists and drummers who want to explore rhythmic expression beyond standard percussion, as well as anyone interested in West African drumming traditions.
