The Meinl Byzance Dark 21'' Double Down Crash-Ride is a hand-hammered signature cymbal developed together with Matt Halpern (Periphery). It works as both a crash and a ride, opens up easily for big crash accents, and carries a clear bell that cuts through a full band mix.

The combination of the dark, raw (unlathed) top and the lathed underside creates a unique blend of sustain and control. The top is also lightly sandblasted, which reduces overtones and shortens decay slightly, giving a washy yet controlled character.

Behind the design

Matt Halpern wanted a cymbal dynamic enough to cut through Periphery's intense sound, while decaying quickly enough not to overpower vocals or other instruments. He has used it in live shows and studio rooms of varying sizes across different genres, and says it delivers exactly what he needed in each setting.

Manufacturing

The Byzance series is made at Meinl's Turkish factory using traditional hand-crafting methods. Each cymbal is cast from B20 bronze alloy (80% copper, 20% tin), heated, rolled and cooled according to a carefully developed schedule before the bell is shaped and the cymbal is hand-hammered into form. The raw cymbals are then sent to Meinl's German factory for quality control, sorting and finishing such as sandblasting and engraving. A combination of Turkish craftsmanship and German quality control behind the Byzance's warm, consistent sound.
