Sound Character

The maple/walnut blend gives a remarkably full tone with clarity and low end, a warm and rich character, and a distinct, sharp attack. Sizes are the usual all-round dimensions but with slightly shallower depths than classic: 10X7 (10" x 7"), 12X8 (12" x 8"), 14X12 (14" x 12"), 16X14 (16" x 14") and 22X18 (22" x 18"). Construction

The shells are lacquered and built in Mapex's classic maple/walnut blend, a combination Mapex has long experimented with and refined into one of its signature builds. The SONIClear bearing edge is rounded at the outer edge, moving the head's contact point further toward the center of the shell. This makes the drum easier to tune, extends sustain and adds more low end and punch; the inner-edge bevel varies with drum size: 45° on smaller drums and 60° on larger ones. The SONIClear Tom Suspension mounts discreetly and delivers maximum resonance in the mounted toms. The standing floor toms use isolated leg mounts (isolation gaskets) with minimal contact between mount and shell, damping the drum as little as possible. The SAS Static legs use two 90° bends instead of the more traditional angled drop to the rubber foot, and combined with the Sonic Pedestal Foot this minimizes floor contact. Mapex's Air Flow Venting is a purpose-designed vent hole that lets air pass out of the shell with minimal resistance.

SONIClear is Mapex's name for its bearing edge, the edge of the shell that meets the drumhead. On many drums this edge is sharply peaked at the outer rim, which means the head doesn't sit perfectly flat and rocks slightly from side to side, making the drum harder to tune and requiring careful, cross-pattern tightening. Mapex instead rounds the bevel at the outer edge, moving the contact point inward toward the center of the shell, and flattens it slightly for more contact area between head and shell. The result is a drum that's considerably easier to tune, can be tuned noticeably lower with a full sound, while the highest, most disruptive overtones are reduced. The drum gains longer sustain and noticeably more low end and punch, at both low and high tunings.
