The Mapex Black Panther Maximus (BPDLMH4600LPB) is a snare drum in solid mahogany, 14x6", designed by jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton for a warm, dynamic and traditional snare sound with plenty of volume. The unique SONIClear bearing edge makes the drum unusually easy to tune, and the Locking I-Lugs help the drum stay in tune throughout a performance. Finished in Piano Black with Sonic Saver Hoops for a complete, well thought-out package.

Construction

The shell is built from 8 plies of mahogany with a thickness of 8.9 mm and has 4 air vents. It is finished in Piano Black and fitted with 10 tension rods per side. The snare wires are a 20-strand Canopus Vintage set, mounted via a Trick Multi Step strainer that makes adjustment and swapping easy. The batter head is a Remo Fiberskyn Diplomat and the resonant head a Remo Ambassador Snare. The hardware, including lugs and hoops, is finished in Brushed Black Chrome.

SONIClear. Mapex's own bearing edge

SONIClear is the name of the bearing edge where the head meets the shell. A traditional bearing edge is often sharply pointed at the outer edge of the shell, which can make the head rock slightly from side to side when seated, making the drum harder to tune and requiring careful, small cross-tightening steps to avoid the head sitting unevenly. Mapex instead rounded the fascet and moved the contact point further toward the center of the shell, also making it slightly flatter for more contact between head and shell. The result is a drum that is significantly easier to tune, can be tuned lower without losing control, and gets a longer sustain with more low end and punch. At the same time, the highest, most disruptive overtones are dampened, giving a more controlled tone at both low and high tunings. The bevel angle varies with drum size. Smaller drums use 45°, larger drums 60°.

Locking I-Lugs

The lugs on this drum are called Locking I-Lugs. Beyond their design, they include a built-in lock in the housing: a neoprene insert that prevents the tension rods from vibrating loose during play. This means the drum holds its tuning considerably longer, which is especially useful between songs at a gig.

Sonic Saver Hoops

The hoops, Sonic Saver Hoops, have a different shape than a classic triple-flanged hoop. The top edge curves inward instead of outward. This gives a more comfortable rimshot as well as extra punch and projection from the drum. The construction is stiffer than a standard pressed hoop but not as hard as a die-cast one, landing somewhere in between. The stiffer hoop makes the drum easier to tune and helps it hold its tuning longer since it flexes less during play, while still preserving the open, traditional tone of a pressed hoop. The shape also helps extend the life of your drumsticks during rimshots.
