Latin Percussion was founded in 1964 by Martin Cohen, a mechanical engineer from the Bronx who eight years earlier had been captivated by the sound of Latin jazz at New York's famous Birdland club. Since trade embargoes made high-quality Cuban-made bongos unavailable in the US, Cohen engineered his own and soon delivered bongos, cowbells and other instruments to musicians in brown paper bags. That close relationship with performing musicians became the company's core philosophy: the needs of the musician always come first.
