Nine kits for Superior Drummer 3, recorded by producer and engineer Niko Bolas in Studio D at The Village in Los Angeles. Eight classic drum kits and one curated drum and percussion kit, captured in four different spots across two rooms. With 45 mix-ready presets and a MIDI collection tailored for these very kits, you get to a finished drum sound quickly.

The room plays along

The Village has hosted everyone from The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to Lady Gaga and Coldplay since the end of the 1960s. After careful trials, Niko Bolas settled on three locations in the main room of Studio D: the piano area, the studio floor and the riser. Selected kits were also placed in a sealed-off vocal booth for a completely contrasting flavor. He used an extensive array of microphones and even captured the ambience of the strings resonating inside the studio grand piano.

Kits with a history

Several of the kits come straight from the drummers own setups: Kenny Aronoff, Steve Jordan, Denny Fongheiser, Charley Drayton, Anthony LoGerfo, Russ Kunkel and Stella Mozgawa. On top of that comes a curated drum and percussion kit sampled with both hands and mallets, featuring djembes, klong yaw, doumbeks, tablas and djun djun.

Who it is for

The palette is broad and works just as well for subtle jazz, acoustic pop and rootsy singer-songwriter material as for edgier rock. If you are after session-ready drums with character and detail rather than a polished standard sound, this is a safe choice.
