Background and craftsmanship

Kangaba is the historic capital of the Mandingo Empire, located 90 kilometers from Bamako toward the Guinean border. Kangaba instruments are all produced in the traditional way: carved from the best woods by the best blacksmiths and assembled with natural goat skins. Since 2000, Kangaba has planted, with the participation of its artists, the variety of trees they use to produce instruments.

The professional instruments are made from dugura, teak and boumou wood. These woods have an incomparable sound and are found only in this region of West Africa, between Mali and Guinea. All drums use natural goat and/or cow skins. The skins undergo no treatment; they are simply shaved by hand with a razor blade.

Sound and feel

The construction and untreated skins give the djembe an original vibration, warmth and power, true to the drumming tradition of the Mandingo Empire.
