The original design comes from drum builder Billy Gladstone's own brush, patented in 1949. Headhunters rediscovered the design and reworked it into a retractable brush, while keeping the idea of two different wire gauges on the same tool: 0.019" thick wires in one end and 0.013" thick wires in the other. That means you can go from a fuller, more pronounced brush sound to a lighter, crisper one just by flipping the brush around.
