The Toca Origins Series African Mask is a traditionally built djembe, lathe turned from a single piece of plantation grown mahogany and carved with an African Mask design. The bowl interior is shaped to eliminate unwanted overtones, giving the drum a focused, traditional djembe tone.

The shell is lathe turned for uniform thickness throughout the body, which helps the drum respond evenly no matter where it's struck. The bowl interior features lathe grooves and a deliberately rough-surfaced carving. A technique used to eliminate overtones and give the djembe its characteristic, defined attack instead of an uncontrolled ringing tone.

Material and Construction

The body is carved from a single piece of environmentally-friendly plantation grown mahogany, with no joined sections. The hand-carved African Mask design on the exterior makes each drum as much a visual piece as an instrument.
