The Afroton AC716 is a gigante-sized caxixi, a rattle handmade in Ghana from plant fibres with a gourd (calabash) bottom filled with fine pebbles. It produces a strong, distinct sound that works great alongside drums and energizes any rhythm.
The caxixi is held in the hand and shaken, or tapped lightly against a leg or drum, to bring out its sound. The fine pebbles inside the gourd bottom create the sharp, rattling tone the instrument is known for. It's a common instrument in African and Latin percussion, often used to add rhythmic texture alongside drums and other percussion.
As each caxixi is handmade from natural materials, the pattern and appearance of the bottom may vary between individual pieces.
