Afroton 14 Keys
Product Description
The Afroton Balafon is a handmade melodic percussion instrument from Ghana, built with 14 selected hardwood tongues mounted on a wooden frame with hanging gourds for amplification. Tuned to a West African pentatonic scale, it produces a warm, friendly sound suited for both playful and serious use.
The balafon is a traditional instrument long associated with griots. West African bards and storytellers who used it to accompany oral history and storytelling passed down through generations. Playing one connects you to that tradition, not just to a melody.
The hanging gourds act as natural resonators beneath the wooden frame, giving the tongues a rounder, warmer voice than a bare frame would produce. Friendly and inviting rather than sharp.
Who It's For
Suitable for children over five as well as enthusiastic adults exploring West African musical tradition or simply looking for a relaxed, melodic percussion instrument. The pentatonic scale makes it easy to play freely without hitting a "wrong" note, which makes it especially welcoming for beginners of any age.
Mallets are included, so you can start playing right out of the box.
