22" Byzance Extra Dry Thin Ride
Product Description
The Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Thin Ride 22" is a hand-hammered B20 ride cymbal with a warm, dry, earthy tone. Its short sustain and clear attack make it a great fit for jazz, fusion, world music, pop and studio work.
Tone Character
The Extra Dry series has a strong character all its own, with a darker, drier sound than many other Byzance lines. This Thin Ride delivers a full, warm tone with good dynamics and a short, earthy sustain with a clear attack. It handles shoulder-of-the-stick accents without ringing forever, keeping it easy to control in a mix.
Compared to the EDMR (Extra Dry Medium Ride) models, the EDTR models tend to crack up a bit more in the sound and take on a slightly warmer character.
Construction
The cymbal is hand-hammered from B20 alloy (80% copper, 20% tin) and features a raw, unlathed top surface combined with a lathed bottom. This combination is what gives the Extra Dry finish its distinctive look and sound.
Byzance cymbals are produced using traditional craftsmanship at Meinl's Turkish factory: the alloy is cast, heated, rolled and cooled through a carefully proven process until the correct thickness is reached, before the bell is shaped and the cymbal is hand-hammered. Series with a lathed surface are then hand-lathed before being shipped to Germany for quality control, sorting and finishing (such as laser logo, brilliant finish or sandblasting). This combination of Turkish craftsmanship and German quality control and finishing is key to Byzance's warm sound and consistent standard.
Studio and Mic-Friendly
Despite its strong character, Extra Dry works very well in studio and close-miked situations, since its round tone and favorable transients don't bleed into the "wrong" microphones the way brighter cymbals can.
Who It's For
The Extra Dry Thin Ride 22" suits players who want a ride with a broad tonal range for genres like jazz, fusion, world music, pop and studio recording, and who prefer a dry, dark, earthy character over a bright, sustain-heavy one.
