Why do trash cymbals have holes?

Removing material from a cymbal lets the sound travel and dissipate faster, creating the fast response and quick decay trash cymbals are known for. Accents come through clearly without drowning in wash. The size, shape and placement of the holes also shape how trashy or dark the cymbal sounds.

Craftsmanship

Byzance is made at Meinl's Turkish factory using traditional craftsmanship. Each cymbal is cast from B20 bronze, heated, rolled and cooled following a carefully proven schedule until the correct thickness is reached. The bell is shaped before hand-hammering gives the cymbal its final form, and lathed series are then hand-lathed. The raw cymbals are sent to Meinl's German factory for quality control, sorting and finishing. This combination of Turkish craftsmanship and German quality control is behind the Byzance series' warm sound and consistent standard. The series is also available as Foundry Reserve, Dual, Vintage, Jazz, Extra Dry, Dark and Brilliant, each with its own sound and look.
