The Dark series within Zildjian's S Family is darker, more complex, trashier and somewhat drier than the rest of the S Family. The crashes in the series are fast, explosive and dark with a controlled decay. The ride cymbals are clear and full with a penetrating bell. The S Dark hi-hats are dark, clear and distinct with fast response and a defined foot chick. The alloy is B12 (88% copper / 12% tin), and the hammering, unique to each cymbal, gives them their sound and look. Appearance can vary in hammering pattern and finish, but the series stays remarkably consistent in sound.

Zildjian's history dates back to 1623. The name is Armenian and means "the cymbal maker". The alchemist Avedis from Constantinople accidentally discovered an alloy of copper, tin and silver with remarkable sound properties while attempting to make gold, and turned to cymbal making instead. Three hundred years later, the family business moved to Boston, USA, and through collaboration with drummers of the era, including Gene Krupa, Zildjian developed the ride, crash, hi-hat and splash cymbal types that are standard today.
