The Mapex MPX is a remarkably affordable snare drum with a maple/poplar shell, updated in 2023 to stay at the top of its price class. The 6.5" deep model gives more low end than the snappier 5.5" version and can be tuned up without turning harsh – a solid choice at any playing level.

Tone and Feel

The maple/poplar blend is a classic pairing where the two woods' characteristics complement each other: a warm, soft tone with a responsive feel, plenty of dynamic range and a vintage-flavored character. The 6.5" depth adds more low end than a 5.5" shell, letting you tune the drum up without it turning thin or harsh.

SONIClear Bearing Edge

SONIClear is Mapex's own, widely praised bearing edge design – the edge of the shell that the head sits against. A standard sharp edge lets the head rock slightly and makes even tuning harder. Mapex instead uses a rounded bevel that moves the contact point inward toward the center of the shell and flattens it slightly, so the head sits more evenly. The result: easier tuning, the ability to tune noticeably lower with a fat sound, fewer harsh high overtones, longer sustain and considerably more low end and punch.
