Sound Character

Aluminum gives the classic metallic tone: a clear, accented snare drum with plenty of control and a crisp snare response. The overtones that give the drum character are still there, but far more controlled than on a snare drum made from, for example, steel, so you can play hard without the snare completely taking over. The sound is open and crisp enough that the drum works especially well with brushes.

SONIClear Bearing Edge

The bearing edge is Mapex's own SONIClear design, a rounded 45-degree bearing edge on this model (60° on larger diameters in the series). Instead of a traditional, sharp edge where the contact point sits at the outer edge of the shell, SONIClear moves the contact point further toward the center and flattens it slightly. This gives better, more even contact between head and shell, making the drum considerably easier to tune. You avoid a rocking head and the need to tighten in extremely small, cross-pattern steps. The design also lets you tune the drum lower with a full sound, reduces the most disturbing high overtones, and gives the drum longer sustain plus more low end and punch, at both low and high tunings.

Sonic Saver Hoops

The hoops are Mapex Sonic Saver Hoops, with a top edge curved inward instead of outward as on a classic triple-flanged hoop. This gives an unusually comfortable rimshot along with extra punch and projection. The hoop becomes stiffer than a standard triple-flanged hoop but not as stiff as a die-cast one. Something in between. This makes the drum a bit easier to tune and helps it hold its tuning longer, since it flexes less during play and the tension rods don't work loose as quickly. At the same time, the open, natural drum sound of a triple-flanged hoop is preserved, with full dynamics. An added benefit is that the curved edge also extends the life of your drumsticks.

Construction and Hardware

The drum has a smooth Cylinder-Drive strainer, chrome-plated hardware, and a natural, brushed aluminum finish. The lugs are, in our opinion, among the best-looking on the market.

The batter head is a Remo Coated Ambassador and the snare-side head a Remo Ambassador Snare. The snare wires have 20 strands.
